Over the years, I have had many ideas about writing a blog. I even started one many years ago that was going to be theological and inspirational writing. It was on the Google Plus platform which shutdown before I ever got going. A topic to write about has been my most perplexing obstacle. I am a theologian, a dental hygienist, a teacher, a preacher, and a chaplain. I enjoy gardening, sewing, crafting, woodworking, carpentry, writing and anything that needs to be done. I’ve managed a household for 35 years and raised two beautiful women. I fought for my daughter’s lives and well-beings in the complex system that is our healthcare and insurance in this country. I raised one professional artist and one medical researcher. I’ve bought an old house and I do most of the repairs and landscaping on my own with the help of family. Not everything has been easy. Some of it has been incredibly hard but all of it has made me whom I am today. If I don’t know how to do something I look it up, study up, then give it a try.
This led me to the name of my blog, Jack-ie of all trades. I thought of calling it Jack-ie of many trades because there certainly is plenty that I don’t know. But Jack-ie of all trades has a traditional ring to it that rolls off the tongue. What will I write about? There was a time that I tried to follow conventional wisdom and have one topic to blog about. As I get older, I hold less and less to convention and do things that don’t fit the norm. That is what I am going to do for my blog. I want to write. I am hoping to do some freelance writing that will be paid work. I already write sermons that people pay to hear so this is an expansion of that work. Some of it will be spiritual, some will be reflections on my life and things I have done. Mostly, it will be about anything that I want to write.
My writing will not be political. It seems that everything is seen through the eyes of politics these days. If you think I am making a political statement, you will most certainly be wrong. It is hard to write a sermon based on scripture or spiritual writings without people thinking I am making a political statement. Even healthcare these days takes on a political hue. My conservative friends think I’m liberal. My liberal friends think I’m conservative. My Republican friends think I’m a Democrat and my Democrat friends think I’m a Republican. I’ll leave it to the reader’s imagination to determine the truth or ignore the topic all together.
Sit back, relax, and maybe grab a cup of tea. Read along with me as I write and we will see where we go from here.
